DANIEL T. CORDARO arrived in California's East Bay in 2007 after road tripping from his Pennsylvania hometown, Scranton. He had just received his B.S. in organic chemistry from Ithaca College, and was accepted into UC Berkeley's chemistry graduate division. Daniel finished the program a year later with a M.S., and decided to expand his perspective from molecules to people.
After reading the works of renowned emotion psychologist Dr. Paul Ekman, Daniel had a few serendipitous encounters that led him to be hired as a research assistant with the Paul Ekman Group, LLC in San Francisco. His experience with Dr. Ekman drew him to join the UCB Psychology Ph.D. program, where he cofounded the Emotionwise Group along with some new ideas for emotion research. He now studies empathy and human emotion with Dacher Keltner and has received his M.A. in Psychology.
Daniel is designing new lines of research and educational tools aimed at understanding universal expressions of emotion and teaching empathy to kids and adults. These curricula are being promoted for use in schools and for online training. He also holds group workshops and other events to promote emotional intelligence and social awareness, including the wide range of our human behavior.
Daniel also writes for a food chemistry book series with Kitchen on Fire , and invents things in his free time to cope with the fact that he is a grad student.

This version is a snapshot of my work in psychology.
To study emotions is to study the essence of our shared animalian experience. It is to witness, as if for the first time, the joys, sorrows, fears, and triumphs of life. It is to connect on the deepest possible level to other humans, and also to extend our compassion to the species without which this rich and connected global ecosystem would be an impossibility. Emotions cannot be distilled in a laboratory room. Emotions are felt, transmitted, and recieved by real people experiencing fundamental life situations that have shaped our culture since ten thousand generations ago. Understanding emotions requires the impossible - asking the world what it is like to collectively feel. This is the task at hand.

Academic Research

Business
These are all in collaboration with Emotionwise Group and Cognisess, LLC .
Why are the areas of academic research, free education, and business important?
Because together, these three form the basis for positive change through independently funded educational tools that are backed by top-level research.
I believe that the work we do at UC Berkeley and Emotionwise can change the world by teaching the science of compassion, empathy, and other skills for living meaningful lives. I noticed that there were many expensive products that claim to teach human expressions and 'body language', but unfortunately very few of these are backed by science. This is where academic research comes in, because what we're doing here at the UC Berkeley Psychology Department (and with our collaborators) is truly cutting-edge work. But though our science is great, a lot of important results are not available to the general public. It is important to translate our research and give it to public educators for free. Free education is how we plan on getting all of this good science into everyone's hands. But curriculum development requires money; in order to fund the creation of free education tools, we need financial independence. This is why we also create tools for businesses, who can pay for specialized products - so that we can design and distribute emotion, compassion, and empathy curricula to teachers and kids free of charge. To complete the cycle, the businesses, kids, and teachers can then participate in our academic research, so that we can keep discovering the most cutting-edge information for everyone. This is the vision for my research and the three main pillars of the Emotionwise Group.
